Teosinte Euchlaena Mexicana Schrad

Teosinte Euchlaena Mexicana Schrad

It is a tall and virgorously growing crop.  It is comparatively less nutritious and palatable than maize but due to its profuse tillering capacity it gives very good fodder yield.  Teosinte can tolerate moderate drought and   temporary flooding caused by heavy monsoon showers.  Normally it does not lodge.   It is  normaly free from toxic constituents. Recommended cultural practices for teosinte are simlar to that of maize.  In case of multicut management, it can give four cuttings and thus has higher nutrient requirement of 65 kg nitrogen (140 kg urea) per acre. One third of it should be applied out basal dose one sixth after first irrigation and one sixth after first, second and third cut.

Manure and Fertilizer requirement: Teosinte responds well to the application farm yard manure and compost.  Apply 10 ton farm yard manure or compost per acre one fortnight before sowing.  In addition to it aply 25 kg urea at sowing time and 25 kg urea 25-30 days after sowing.  In the absence of farm yard manure application it reuires 110 kg urea per ace. In addition to this in two split doses.  Half of the urea should be applied at the time of sowing and remaining half 25-30 days after sowing.

Harvesting: In single cut management it should be harvested about one week before tasseling while in multicut management first cutting should taken at 1.0-1.25.

Yield:- 160-200 quintals of green fodder acre is obtained in single cut management, while a yield of meteric height stage leaving a stubble height of 10-12 cm for better regeneration cutting should be taken at 45-50 days interval leaving stubble height of 10 cm. 300-350 quintal per acre is obtained in 3-4 cuts on fertile and irrigated soils.
